05.05.2009 - after the rain is first and foremost the fantastic adventure of Isabelle Nordmann, the founder and creator of the now famous Geneva spa. Fond of challenges and following a vision, she imagined a concept of well-being at a time when the spa sector was in its infancy in the Western world.
nothing about Isabelle Nordmann suggested that one day she could embark on a career in the wellness market. Armed with a Marketing and Finance degree from the University of Denver (Colorado), she set her sights on mass retailing. But she did not consider the power of destiny. In 2000, a minor ski accident forced Isabelle Nordmann to take a temporary sick leave from work. An opportunity for a business-woman-turned-computer-developer to reflect upon the future. “We were in the midst of the internet bubble collapse, a particularly stressful period. I had to do something,” she smiles.
sensitive to Buddhist philosophy, the young woman imagined a well-being center dedicated to the search for body-and-mind equilibrium. Two years and one market study later, after the rain was born.
backed by the competence of an expert in the field, Isabelle Nordmann, pioneer in the spa world, and expectant mother of her third child, surprised everyone by opening, in 2002, the first urban day spa in Europe. Founded on a slogan– individual management -, after the rain offers an 800 m2 spa in a fairytale-like décor at the very heart of Geneva with treatments delivered by specialized therapists. The goal: to provide tired customers with a sensation of peace and well-being that emanates from nature after a heavy rain.
the success was immediate. Seduced by an exclusive and prestigious welcome, the ranks of enthusiastic clients of the after the rain spa are growing in numbers everyday. Very quickly, the establishment at Passage des Lions in Geneva began to welcome between 60 and 70 customers per day. During this time, the trend-setting Isabelle Nordmann developed bold and 100% enjoyable treatment concepts– more specifically chocolate body wraps and the ‘la vie en rose’ tandem massage – which, within just a few weeks, became a sensation of iconic proportions and never ceased to fascinate the media.
encouraged by her success, Isabelle Nordmann devised a development and diversification strategy, once again based on her intuition. In 2004, she imagined a line of facial treatments and for this project sought out the competence of Pierre Bottiglieri, a famous chemist and formulator on the international cosmetology arena.
in 2006, the after the rain spa prescriptions line, centered around the concept of personalization, once again left a mark on the public. There is no doubt: this product line is highly innovated. Based on the separation of active ingredients and their packaging, it comes in the form of different elixirs which can be blended with an essential cream depending on skin needs.
the following year marked the beginning of the company’s international expansion. Developing foreign business with the help of distributors enables after the rain to successfully increase its presence on distant markets such as China, Korea and Russia. The “partner spa” offer gives any spa establishment the opportunity to add after the rain brand treatments to its services.
in 2008, the company implemented its franchise offer: architecture, decoration, training, operational procedures and business plan – meaning the full after the rain expertise – are made available to the franchisees while taking into account their local requirements. The formula is showing rapid growth, with the inauguration of the first after the rain urban day spa in Cyprus at the beginning of 2009.
today, thanks to its many growth initiatives, after the rain enjoys a presence in nearly 10 countries throughout the world, together with continuous global expansion since its inception. Is this enough to satisfy Isabelle Nordmann? “It’s true. Sometimes, I still find it hard to believe,” she admits, before confiding that she hopes to embark on a new challenge. “For a great part of my life, I lived in the United States. It is my dream to bring the after the rain concept over there.”
